Endangered Species: Historic Worcester Properties

Based on Preservation Worcester's 1996-1997 “Ten Most Endangered Properties” list, this exhibit focuses attention on the city's rich architectural tradition. These properties, built between 1842 and 1906, have served a range of functions, from public institutions (Green Hill Park, Webster Street Firehouse), to private businesses (Old State Mutual Building), from civic and religious organizations (Odd Fellows Hall, Mission Chapel, Shaari Torah), to personal residences (Amos White House, Castle Street Row, David Tapley House, and the Dowley-Taylor Mansion).

Seven of the ten properties are currently on the National Register of Historic Places. These properties are threatened by neglect, deterioration, vacancy, abandonment, misuse, and lack of funds for restoration. While considerable progress has been made for some properties – notably the restoration of the Dowley-Taylor Mansion -- others remain at risk.
